The Special Projects group within NYK
Logistics is dedicated to providing logistic solutions
for many companies throughout the United States. Recently
our team completed a six-month assignment for a world-leading
automotive manufacturer. In the past the customer had
experienced congestion, delays and detention costs.
The challenge was to implement a new process that would
effectively schedule all inbound domestic and international
shipments into a new facility then under construction.

The Special Projects team and customer
developed a process that allowed NYK Logistics to act
as "ground-traffic control" at the job site. Working
together then with on-site representatives of the general
contractor, production engineers and rigging companies,
a solution was achieved.
A new "Central Information Center" (CIC) was established
and staffed by NYK Logistics personnel. This new office
became responsible for all inbound shipments to the
job site. The CIC acted as facilitator between the carriers,
production engineers, general contractor and rigging
companies. This central coordination process insured
that cargo would arrive on time and be handled in a
manner cost-effective for all parties. |

Good planning equals great results. On-site
congestion was eliminated. The unloading crews performed
their work more efficiently. Long unloading lines were
eliminated, which reduced truck and labor detention
time.
On-site traffic flow improved tremendously, which increased
the productivity of all parties. Best of all, the total
safety of the job site improved: a win-win situation
for everyone. We understand that times are changing,
